In Ep 23, we start reading Section 19, entitled “Philosophy (On the question: who are we?). Here, Heidegger asserts that “philosophy is meditation on beyng, which is necessarily meditation on one’s self.” But the question – “who are we?” – carries a host of complications, obfuscations, and assumptions that prevent us from answering it in any way that aligns with the truth of beyng. Ultimately, we need to reach the level (Dasein) in which we can be appropriated in an open time space where the bliss and dismay of the event bring about the absconding of the gods. We then wrap things up by talking about the many ways in which identity, rather than self, is impacted into us via stories, questions, and organizations that set us on a path of needing more identity to achieve ourselves, all the while having lost our “self” to such formulations and formalizations. How can we find the self again?
